Public Holidays in United States: 2026–2028

The United States observes 11 federal public holidays each year, from New Year’s Day to Christmas. When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, it is usually observed on the nearest weekday — and individual states add their own extras on top.

This page lists every public and bank holiday in United States for 2026, 2027 and 2028 in one place. Use the month and year picker to jump to any month, or browse the whole year at a glance. Each entry shows the exact date, the weekday, the type of holiday and what it means for banks, offices, schools and shops.

On federal holidays, federal offices, banks, schools and the stock market close. Most private businesses shut too, though shops and restaurants in big cities often stay open with reduced hours. The calendar is updated with substitute and observed days where they apply, and lunar dates are clearly marked as expected until officially confirmed.

Guide to public holidays in United States

How US federal holidays work

The United States has 11 federal public holidays set by federal law. They apply to federal employees and federal offices, and most banks, the stock markets and the postal service follow a similar calendar. Private employers are not legally required to give these days off, so whether you get a paid holiday depends on your employer or contract.

Weekend and observed days

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal workers usually observe it on the Friday before. When it falls on a Sunday, the holiday moves to the Monday after. Many of the holidays are already fixed to a Monday, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, which creates regular three-day weekends.

State and local holidays

Each state sets its own holiday list as well. Some add days such as Cesar Chavez Day, Patriots' Day or Mardi Gras, and some do not observe every federal holiday. Always check your state and city calendar for school closures and local government offices.

Planning tips

Banks and federal offices close on federal holidays, while many shops stay open with holiday sales. Shipping and mail services often pause, so plan deliveries and payments a few days earlier around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
