Public Holidays in India: 2026–2028

India has 3 compulsory national holidays — Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti — plus a rich calendar of festivals like Diwali, Holi and Eid. States choose their own additional holidays, so the exact list varies across the country.

This page lists every public and bank holiday in India for 2026, 2027 and 2028 in one place. Use the month and year picker to jump to any month, or browse the whole year at a glance. Each entry shows the exact date, the weekday, the type of holiday and what it means for banks, offices, schools and shops.

Banks, government offices and schools close on national holidays. During major festivals like Diwali, most businesses shut for at least a day; exact closures vary by state. The calendar is updated with substitute and observed days where they apply, and lunar dates are clearly marked as expected until officially confirmed.

Dates marked expected follow the lunar calendar and are confirmed by official moon-sighting announcements — they may shift by a day.

Guide to public holidays in India

National and gazetted holidays

India has three national holidays observed everywhere: Republic Day on 26 January, Independence Day on 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October. The central government also publishes a list of gazetted holidays for its offices, covering major festivals of different faiths.

Restricted holidays

Alongside gazetted holidays there is a list of restricted holidays. Central government employees can choose a limited number of these, so offices stay open while individual staff take the days that matter to them.

State and bank holidays

Each state publishes its own holiday list, and bank holidays are declared by states under the Negotiable Instruments Act. As a result, a bank may be closed in one state and open in another on the same date.

Festival dates

Festivals such as Diwali, Holi and Dussehra follow the Hindu lunisolar calendar, and Islamic festivals follow moon sighting, so their dates change every year. Check the official list for your state before planning travel.
