Public Holidays in Germany: 2026–2028
Germany has 9 nationwide public holidays, from New Year’s Day to German Unity Day (October 3). On top of those, each state (Bundesland) adds its own — Bavaria gets the most, thanks to Corpus Christi, All Saints’ Day and the Assumption.
This page lists every public and bank holiday in Germany for 2026, 2027 and 2028 in one place. Use the month and year picker to jump to any month, or browse the whole year at a glance. Each entry shows the exact date, the weekday, the type of holiday and what it means for banks, offices, schools and shops.
Almost everything closes on public holidays — shops included, by law. Bakeries may open briefly in the morning; restaurants and tourist sites stay open. The calendar is updated with substitute and observed days where they apply, and lunar dates are clearly marked as expected until officially confirmed.
Dates marked expected follow the lunar calendar and are confirmed by official moon-sighting announcements — they may shift by a day.

Guide to public holidays in Germany
Nationwide holidays
Germany has nine public holidays observed in every federal state, including New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, German Unity Day and both Christmas days.
State holidays
The 16 federal states add their own holidays. Examples include Epiphany, Corpus Christi, Reformation Day and All Saints' Day, so the total number of holidays depends on where you live and work.
No substitute days
Germany does not normally move a holiday when it falls on a weekend, so some years have fewer weekday holidays than others.
Planning tips
Most shops close on public holidays as well as Sundays. Stock up the day before, and expect busy roads before long weekends such as Ascension and Whitsun.
